Do You Fear The Boomers In #CRE? No? Maybe You Should!

Ah, the ever-present Boomer Generation. As we sit here in 2019 they were the generation born between 1944 and 1964. They’re currently between 54-74 years old (76 million in the U.S.) Source- KASASA

And as I have stated in a previous post “In 2011, that first round of Baby Boomers—those Americans born between 1946 and 1964—turns 65. From now until 2030, 10,000 Baby Boomers each day will hit retirement age.” Source- Senior Living. So, that means that we still have over 10 years to go, we are just about half way. That means most of them are 60 and under.”

And you are like “so what, 60 is old dude. those people are done.” I had a friend of mine from California recently mention that at 45 most people are peaking and ending their “big run.” By 55 they are done or are “hanging on way past their prime.”  Remember that’s California where, and I reference another post of mine where I stated that LA is  “Where Narcissism Is Not Only Encouraged It’s Rewarded.”

In the world, we live in today most if not all media is youth-oriented. If it’s not young, hip (hop) and supposedly happening and you don’t get it then “get off the fucking planet ” is the message. Move over, make way, here we come and here we are. Most sports are dominated by people of what age? Most movies are targeted at who? As a side: How many more fucking comic book movies can they make? It’s the world we are all too familiar with.

But…

I, we, you, live in another world entirely. The world of #CRE. Or as I call it “The Real World.”

A world that is now and will be for a long time to come dominated by…BOOMERS. 

Don’t agree? Oh, let me show you the reality that you are so in denial of.

Boomers are here and they are here to stay and they know what they are doing.

They understand tech and they may understand tech better than you do. Yes, they do. 

Here’s another thing Boomers do and do well, they know how to make money. Oh, yes they do and then some.

So in the real world of #CRE, you have an entire generation of people owning, running and creating a marketplace/asset class that is worth trillions.

They know how to make money and they understand the entire process including any and all technologies related to it.

Do you think that that last statement is complete bulllshit? Do you?

If so let me personally tell you to FUCK OFF and find another business to try and fuck up. 

I said take your young ass somewhere else and Fuck Off!

Boomers (and the generation right behind them, more on that later) will push #CRE and #Tech to places, not even you have thought of. How is that possible and why?

Several factors are coming together and reinforcing one another, boomers are now bringing new ideas and different expectations to #CRE. What can’t they execute if they want to? How about this scenario. What if the boomers take what they know and what you think you know or have “created” and go kick your ass?

Let’s call it their idea of “The Second Life Of #CRE.”  It’s their asset class, their ideas, their tech, and their money. Hmm, now that sounds interesting.

Here is something else to think about, the boomers do not need any of your help. Trust me they don’t even think about it. Well maybe they do, but all you’re doing is adding on products to what they have already done. Are there a few new and different things? Of course, there are, but that’s been true since the dawn of the industrial revolution. You are not changing the world. You may be monitoring the HVAC system of a building and collecting data, but what you are doing is just improving that process. A process that has been there since…? You have not changed HVAC forever, have you? No, you have not.

The boomer generation is by all accounts healthier, more educated, more experienced, more qualified, more willing, more market savvy, and more able than any generation previous to do any and all for and with #CRE and by a long shot. 

Have you been ignoring it all?

Age discrimination, it’s real and still prevalent today.

But in the business that is #CRE…good luck. 

It’s who you will be selling to for at least a decade and probably more.

It’s who you will be working with maybe forever.

It’s who will be hiring you. Here is a thought, maybe it’s someone you should be hiring.

The business cycle hasn’t been tamed, and more recessions are certain to lie in our future. The timing of the next downturn is uncertain. Who do you want on your side? Who might you need on your side?

So, Do You Fear The Boomers In #CRE? No! Maybe You Should.

Or maybe you better figure out a way…

Boomers 76 million + Gen X 82 million = 158 million between 39-74 years old. How many are going to retire any time soon?
